Obituary for Jay Zendrowski (1957-2023)

The London chess community mourns the loss of Jay Zendrowski, a renowned chess master and esteemed member of the London Chess Club, who passed away on April 30, 2023, at the age of 66.

Jay was a passionate chess player and talented novelist. He was recognized as a chess master by the Chess Federation of Canada and won numerous awards during his time at the London Chess Club, including 5-time Standard Chess Champion, 6-time Active Chess Champion, and 4-time Speed Chess Champion. At his peak, Jay was among the top 60 chess players in Canada. Jay shared his love of chess with players of all skill levels and mentored many up-and-coming players. Without his guiding hand, the London Chess Club would not be the same today.

Beyond chess, Jay lived a life filled with creativity and intellectual pursuits. He was the author of three novels, The Soldier’s Mirror, Every Breath You Take, and Shake Off The Ghosts. Jay also worked for many years as a building plan examiner, where he formed enduring relationships with colleagues and members of the building community.

Jay will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his wife Sandra, son Nick, grandchild Elias, brothers Paul, Dana, and Peter, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory lives on through the many lives he touched.

Our condolences go out to Jay’s family and friends. Though he has passed, the gifts of his kindness, humour, wisdom, and mentorship will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Jay. Your legacy lives on.
